DIY Body Sugaring {{Recipe for Removing Hair}}

I found an awesome recipe for removing unwanted hair via tipnut.com! Let’s get real ladies, I’m pretty sure all of us HATE {with a very strong passion} shaving our legs and/or plucking our eyebrows! I just feel it is a pure waste of time. I mean really though, it’s just a hassle. Men have it easy in this area… their legs can be grizzly beyond belief and it’s accepted because their “men”. Ha. Anyways, those of you who get waxing done on a regular basis, go ahead and cancel those appointments! This recipe is supposed to be a major money saver! If you are up for trying out the recipe, here it is:

{FYI: You will feel a slight “discomfort” when you use this waxing recipe same as if you went to a professional to get it done.}

Supplies Needed:

  • 1″ strips of cotton fabric {approx. 8″-10″ in length}
  • Wooden popsicle sticks {or spatula}

Before getting started: Wash well with soap and water, removing all traces of oil, makeup, deodorant and dirt. Pat dry.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of honey
  • Juice from half of a lemon {Freshly squeezed}

Heating Instructions:

  1. Combine ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Once it starts to boil, reduce heat to low and cook until the mixture reaches 250 degrees Fahrenheit {constantly stirring in the process so it does not boil over} then remove from heat. **If a thicker paste is preferred, heat to 245 degrees Fahrenheit.**
  3. Let it sit until it is warm then pour into a canning jar.
  4. Continue to let it cool till it’s at room temp. **If not cooled properly, it can cause burns.**

How to Apply:

  1. Lightly dust the surface with cornstarch and rub it in. Lightly is the key! {This will help protect the skin so the paste doesn’t stick as harshly to your skin, lessening the “discomfort”.}
  2. Using the popsicles sticks, slather on a thin layer in the direction of the hair growth then cover with cotton strips.
  3. Rub the fabric a few times firmly {in the direction of the hair growth}.
  4. Let it sit approx. 1 minute.
  5. Pull fabric off quickly in the opposite direction of the hair growth. {If mixture gets to cool you can reheat.}

{{Does this hurt? Yes, A wee bit. ;-) BUT the benefit of waxing opposed to shaving is when you wax you pull the root out instead of just cutting the tip of the hair off. This means it will take a lot longer for your hair to grow back.}}

Tips:

  • Hair should be at least 1/4″ so the mix/paste has something to really grab onto.
  • Hand wash the strips in warm soapy water, dry and reuse them again and again. {Muslin or diaper flannel work well.}
  • Careful to avoid growths such as skin tags, warts and moles. Also avoid applying on top of stretch marks, abrasions, scrapes or cuts, scar tissue, delicate area around the eyes, rashes and varicose veins.
  • Seal any leftovers in the jar and refrigerate to use later. {simply reheat}
  • If paste is too hard to work with, add a spoonful of water and reheat in the microwave for a minute or until it’s hot. Stir then allow to cool as above.

What do you all think?! I’m hoping to start using this recipe more and shaving less! :-)

  3. This recipe works like a charm. I haven’t tried it my own but I had sugar waxing numerous times back in my country (now that i’m in the states; I came from Asia), and I so much prefer this than the usual, chemical waxing. I always did it on my underarms area and this recipe does not give you ANY harms :D

  4. The kind of sugar to be used.. brown or granulated (white) sugar?

  5. I can’t wait to try this but what do you recommend using in place of cornstarch? I’m allergic to corn. :(

    • Hi Aly, I am also allergic to corn. I thought I was the only one.

    • Elspeth says:

      Maybe try using arrowroot instead?

      I’ve used sugar wax before and felt it was a lot gentler on the skin, even without dusting with cornstarch before applying.

    • Hey, I’m studying somatology and when we wax we use baby powder, it has the same affect, just don’t apply to much, otherwise the wax won’t stick.. :-)

  6. Just curious: has anyone ever ACTUALLY done this successfully?

  7. I it doesn’t work, you could use in your tea, or in place of a simple syrup in mixed drinks:)
