Protein Hair Mask

Since I’ve had my little one, I have really struggled to find time to do my hair! It’s sometimes complicated to just find time to wash it! {I know it’s gross but let’s be real folks.} These days I tend to just “throw it up”, spray a little hair spray on it and go. I normally have a lot of body to my hair since it’s naturally wavy but lately it has been limp, dry and just plain blah. I researched and found that a hair mask is supposed to boost the body and give it shine as well as nourish the scalp which sounded wonderful but I really didn’t see how it could give it body. I figured that the olive oil in the hair mask would just make it greasy and weigh it down. Either way though, I was desperate and gave it a shot. My expectations were pretty low and I honestly didn’t know if my hair would end up looking like a grease pit when I was finished with the mask but to my surprise, it worked beautifully!!! Honest… I felt I needed to take the time and share this with all of you because it’s just that amazing. You HAVE to try this!

Protein Hair Mask {Recipe}

photo (58)

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 1 Egg Yolk
  • 1 Cup WARM Water

How To:

photo (59)

  • Make sure your hair is freshly washed & detangled. Also, pat hair with towel to soak up moisture.
  • Mix all ingredients together.
  • Apply to damp hair. {The best way to do this is to use a bottle with a small opening at the tip and distribute throughout hair.}
  • Once mask is applied, run a comb through your hair to be sure the mask is evenly distributed.
  • Let sit for 30 mins.
  • Rinse hair with warm water & shampoo & condition as normal.

This mask gave my hair more body than ever before and helped to sooth my dry scalp! Loved everything about it! I know you’ll love it too!

Q’s & A’s:

  • What are the benefits of using a protein hair mask? It creates healthy, smooth & shiny hair that has more body than before as well as encourages hair growth.

Why olive oil for your hair? Olive oil improves the elasticity of your hair, conditions and reduces frizz.

Why egg yolk for your hair? Egg yolk makes your hair softer, silkier and more manageable, and the added strength from the protein prevents breakage. Your hair will also have more volume and will reflect light better, making it shinier.

10 Makeup Mistakes

mistakes

I was reading on Oprah today and found this amazing info! It explains the top 10 makeup mistakes that most women make. I found it to be insightful and thought I would share! Enjoy ladies :)

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

foundationMistake #1: Using Too Much Foundation

A foundation that’s too thick will settle into fine lines and sap the luminosity from your skin. “Only use foundation where you need it to even out discoloration,” says makeup artist Frances Hathaway. “You don’t have to cover every inch of your skin.” When buying a foundation, avoid those described as “matte,” “velvet,” and “long-wearing”; look for sheer liquid formulas with light-diffusing pigments. If you have dry skin, foundation can look patchy and accentuate discoloration, so exfoliate two to three times a week and always apply a moisturizer after cleansing.

eye circlesMistake #2: Over-Concealing Your Under-Eye Circles

A thick concealer that comes in a stick will eradicate the shadows under your eyes, but it will also draw attention to the crepiness and fine lines that usually show up in that area first (because the skin there is thin). A better option: A brush-on highlighter pen that uses illuminating particles, not opaque color, to camouflage dark circles. Apply it only near the inner corners of your under-eye area, where shadows are most prominent.

lipsMistake #3: Wearing Deep, Dark Lip Colors

A dark color makes any surface look smaller—a welcome illusion perhaps on your hips but not your lips. To make your mouth look fuller, choose bright lipsticks and glosses (peaches, pinks, vibrant reds) over deep shades (burgundies, wines, browns). Makeup artists use another trick to create the illusion of luscious lips: Before applying color, trace a highlighter pencil along your upper lip line, then buff it out with your finger.

powderMistake #4: Finishing with Powder

Youthful skin reflects light. Powders prevent light reflection and tend to magnify lines in the skin. If powder has been the final step of your makeup routine since high school, it can be difficult to quit cold-turkey. Here’s a three-step program: First, switch to a very sheer translucent powder. Then, start using it only on your nose and chin. Finally, trade the powder for a packet of blotting tissues—use one, only on the T-zone (nose, chin, and forehead), if you’re shiny midday.

Cosmetic pencil.Mistake #5: Wearing Black Eyeliner

Don’t skip eyeliner altogether—it’s a great way to make your eyes look more open—but choose brown over black, which can be harsh. And keep the color diffuse. “You want to define the eyes with softness and blending, not strict lines,” says makeup artist Troy Surratt. “A thick liner can leave the upper lids looking heavier than they are.” The best technique: Trace a brown pencil liner along the upper lash line (into the roots of the lashes), focusing on the outer corners; smudge it with a Q-tip.

liplinerMistake #6: Going Overboard with Lip Liner

A lip liner can define your lips and prevent color from feathering into any lines around the mouth but choose one very carefully. If you line your lips too heavily, or with a color that’s too dark, they’ll look tight and pursed. For the most natural effect, your lip liner should match the color of your lips, not the color of your lipstick. Choose a creamy formula that won’t adhere to any dry patches and use it to fill in your lips entirely.

bottom lashesMistake #7: Using Liner and Mascara on Your Lower Lashes

Playing up your lower lashes can make your eyes look droopy and draw attention to dark circles. Instead, curl your upper lashes and wiggle a volumizing mascara into their roots and slowly through the ends for the most uplifting effect.

Woman Applying BlushMistake #8: Skipping Blush

A rosy flush on your cheeks brings instant life to your face. And, if applied correctly, blush can offer a little lift. Smile, find the fleshiest part of your cheek and apply color just slightly above it. Blend the color out toward your temples in circles, not a line, using a big fluffy brush. You want to avoid a stripe of color that stretches along your cheekbones, which can make you look drawn and hollow, says Surratt.

lipstickMistake #9: Applying Lipstick Straight from the Tube

The borders of the lips soften with age, and any extra lipstick migrates easily. To avoid bleeding color, use your finger or a lip brush so that you don’t deposit too much pigment. Concentrate the lipstick in the center of your mouth, and blend it out with a finger. Top it with a moisturizing balm or light gloss.

eyebrowsMistake #10: Choosing a Too-Dark Eyebrow Pencil

“Your brow color fades as you age, so the brow pencil that you were using at 25 will look too stark against your complexion at 50,” says makeup artist Denise Markey. She recommends Maybelline Define-a-Brow Eyebrow Pencils which come in four shades. Choose the one that’s a shade or two lighter than your natural brow color. If your brows are starting to get a little wiry, run a clear brow gel over them as well, brushing them up and out toward your temples.

Banana Face Mask

As I’ve mentioned a few times {orrrr a million}, I struggle terribly with very dry & sensitive skin. Many times I have to make my own products or be extremely picky with the store bought ones. I bought a face mask through a big name company a few months back thinking it was going to work wonders for my skin {since it focused on sensitive skin} just to be disappointed… oh and splotchy. Yes, I broke out in hives all over my face. I should’ve shared that pic with you! ;-) I’ve been scoping out Pinterest like a mad woman trying to find an all natural face mask for sensitive AND dry skin. Surprisingly, it’s hard to find them but I believe I have found my match made in heaven. I used this mask on my face twice last week and NO hives just smooth, glowing skin! Big improvement.

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 mashed banana
  • 2 teaspoons of Olive Oil or Coconut Oil

photo (40)

How to:

1. Mix together your egg yolk, mashed banana and 2 teaspoons of Olive Oil {or Coconut Oil} until well blended.

photo (39)

photo (37)

2. Apply to your face & let set for 20 mins . {Tip: Make sure your face is clean before applying.}

photo (36)

3. Rinse with cold water & pat dry.

4. Moisturize {if needed}.

photo (35)

I’m amazed by how soft it makes my skin feel and doesn’t dry it our OR break it out! This is my new “go-to”.

Q’s & A’s:

  • Why banana? Banana’s exfoliate & moisturize the skin leaving it soft & hydrated. {Click here to read more}
  • Why egg yolk? Eggs contain vitamin B2, vitamin B3 and zinc. Vitamin B2 can help alleviate stress, which is a known contributor to acne. Vitamin B3 aids with circulation, which can help skin look and feel healthier. Zinc boosts the immune system. This can help acne heal and even prevent future breakouts. In addition, eggs contain vitamin A, which is beneficial for scarring. {Click here to read more}
  • Why Olive Oil? Olive oil is rich in vitamin E and vitamin A. Vitamin E gives you a youthful appearance by slowing aging. Vitamin A is what gives skin a healthy, natural glow. Olive oil is also filled with antioxidants that fight free radicals that cause skin to age. {Click here to read more}

Detox Bath

There is no doubt in this day and age, our bodies are open to more toxins than ever! Toxins seem to be everywhere… in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the medications we take and in the water we drink. {Yuck.} One way to remove all this junk from your body is by detoxification {<<<–the body’s way of removing and metabolizing these dangerous compounds} and by doing so, we flush out toxins, boost our health, strengthen our immune system and prevent disease! {All pluses in my book!} If we do not remove the toxins, metabolic waste builds up in our body and can cause illnesses.

I found this list of today’s modern diseases that are related to toxicity via healthylivinghowto.com:

  • Parkinson’s
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Dementia
  • Heart disease
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia syndrome
  • Cancers
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Food allergies
  • Arthritis
  • Digestive diseases
  • Menstrual problems

So let’s move on to the positive now, the good stuff… soaking in the tub!

How do I detox? –>>> A detox bath made from Epsom Salt!
It’s one of the easiest therapies that can enhance our body’s natural detox process.
Epsom Salt not only draws out toxins, but also has health benefits of it’s own as well!
–>>>Benefits of Epsom Salt: Eases stress and relaxes the body, relieves pain and muscle cramps, helps muscles and nerves function properly, helps prevent hardening of arteries and blood clots, makes insulin more effective, relieves constipation and eliminates toxins from the body. {Click here for details on benefits and uses: saltworks.us}
photo(301)
Detox Bath “How-To”:

1. Add 2 cups epsom salt to your bath water. {Get the water as hot as you can stand it. We’re looking to create a nice sweat!}

2. If your bath water is not filtered, add 1 cup of baking soda. {This helps neutralize the chemicals as well as increase mineral absorption.}

4. Immerse yourself in the water, allll the way up to your neck. {Soak for at least 20 mins.}

5. Once you are done soaking, get up slowly. {You may feel a little light-headed, this will go away as soon as you shower quickly in cool water.}

6. Once dry you can apply a natural moisturizer like shea butter or coconut oil. {Again no lotions with perfumes, dyes or chemicals.}

Tips:

  • Do not eat immediately before OR after taking a detox bath. Instead, hydrate yourself with filtered water before AND after.
  • Rest and rejuvenate.
  • Do not use harsh soaps/shampoos after bath since your pores are open & will absorb the chemicals from those products.
 Q’s & A’s:
How are toxins released via a detox bath? –>>> Through sweat!
The skin is the largest detoxification organ in which toxins can be drawn out through via sweat.
How often should I take a detox bath? –>>> Daily!
Dr. Mark Hyman {functional medicine expert} encourages a 20 minute detox bath daily, right before bed.
Enjoy feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and squeaky clean! ;-)

Christmas is just a couple days away and I’ve yet to finish my Christmas shopping! {Eeks. slacker!} As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, when it comes to buying Christmas presents I am a procrastinator and I know I’m not the only one out there because the mall was filled with them yesterday. lol. Thank goodness I’m a passionate DIY-er though. I’ve been beasting out body scrubs as presents for friends and family. I LOOOOVE how the coconut oil in it makes my skin look and feel so I had to share! I don’t know about all of you but I’m becoming slightly obsessed with coconut oil and all of the benefits that come along with using it. While searching around on Pinterest, I found this site that was uber informative about coconut oil and wanted to share some of my favorite tips I pulled from it. Enjoy!

24. Goo Gone – just mix equal parts coconut oil and baking soda into a paste. Apply to the “sticky” area and let it set for a minute. Then scrub off with an old toothbrush or the scrubby side of a sponge.

25. Insect repellent – mix coconut oil with peppermint oil extract and rub it all over exposed skin. Keeps insects off better than anything with DEET! Tons safer too.

Chocolate Mint Body Scrub

I was struggling to find a small gift to give out to friends and family for Christmas this year. You know, those people who you just want to let them know they’re noticed and appreciated. I wanted it to be “home-y” and something they could pamper themselves with. Of course I searched all over Pinterest {<–my dearest & closest friend ;-) } trying to find the body scrub recipe that was screaming my name. They all looked great but I had made most of them before so I was wanting something a little different. I decided to go ahead and just combine my own ingredients to make the perfect body scrub and what do you know… I ended up LOVING it! {Can I say loving again? Loving it!} It makes my skin feel a-maz-ingggg and I can’t wait to make a lot more for everyone on my Christmas list!

DIY Body Sugaring {{Recipe for Removing Hair}}

I found an awesome recipe for removing unwanted hair via tipnut.com! Let’s get real ladies, I’m pretty sure all of us HATE {with a very strong passion} shaving our legs and/or plucking our eyebrows! I just feel it is a pure waste of time. I mean really though, it’s just a hassle. Men have it easy in this area… their legs can be grizzly beyond belief and it’s accepted because their “men”. Ha. Anyways, those of you who get waxing done on a regular basis, go ahead and cancel those appointments! This recipe is supposed to be a major money saver! If you are up for trying out the recipe, here it is:

{FYI: You will feel a slight “discomfort” when you use this waxing recipe same as if you went to a professional to get it done.}

photo(279)

Supplies Needed:

  • 1″ strips of cotton fabric {approx. 8″-10″ in length}
  • Wooden popsicle sticks {or spatula}

Before getting started: Wash well with soap and water, removing all traces of oil, makeup, deodorant and dirt. Pat dry.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of honey
  • Juice from half of a lemon {Freshly squeezed}

Heating Instructions:

  1. Combine ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Once it starts to boil, reduce heat to low and cook until the mixture reaches 250 degrees Fahrenheit {constantly stirring in the process so it does not boil over} then remove from heat. **If a thicker paste is preferred, heat to 245 degrees Fahrenheit.**
  3. Let it sit until it is warm then pour into a canning jar.
  4. Continue to let it cool till it’s at room temp. **If not cooled properly, it can cause burns.**

photo(278)

How to Apply:

  1. Lightly dust the surface with cornstarch and rub it in. Lightly is the key! {This will help protect the skin so the paste doesn’t stick as harshly to your skin, lessening the “discomfort”.}
  2. Using the popsicles sticks, slather on a thin layer in the direction of the hair growth then cover with cotton strips.
  3. Rub the fabric a few times firmly {in the direction of the hair growth}.
  4. Let it sit approx. 1 minute.
  5. Pull fabric off quickly in the opposite direction of the hair growth. {If mixture gets to cool you can reheat.}

photo(280)

{{Does this hurt? Yes, A wee bit. ;-) BUT the benefit of waxing opposed to shaving is when you wax you pull the root out instead of just cutting the tip of the hair off. This means it will take a lot longer for your hair to grow back.}}

Tips:

  • Hair should be at least 1/4″ so the mix/paste has something to really grab onto.
  • Hand wash the strips in warm soapy water, dry and reuse them again and again. {Muslin or diaper flannel work well.}
  • Careful to avoid growths such as skin tags, warts and moles. Also avoid applying on top of stretch marks, abrasions, scrapes or cuts, scar tissue, delicate area around the eyes, rashes and varicose veins.
  • Seal any leftovers in the jar and refrigerate to use later. {simply reheat}
  • If paste is too hard to work with, add a spoonful of water and reheat in the microwave for a minute or until it’s hot. Stir then allow to cool as above.

What do you all think?! I’m hoping to start using this recipe more and shaving less! :-)

Homemade Eczema Cream/Skin Moisturizer

Happy Thursdayyy!

I’m anxious to share the recipe for this cream! DIY-ers, it’s a MUST try! In my little family all of us have eczema and we’ve used everything you can think of including prescription medications and nothing {Yes, nothing!} has worked. THIS is our life saver. {sighhh of relief} End. of. story. {dramatic much? ;-) }

This recipe can be used as a daily skin moisturizer to prevent eczema from flaring up. If by chance it does still appear this helps to nip it in the bud quickly! You ready for the best moisturizer recipe ever??? Well, let’s get to it!

HOMEMADE ECZEMA CREAM/SKIN MOISTURIZER

Items needed:

  • 1/4 cup of oats
  • 3/4 cup of coconut oil
  • Few drops of rosemary oil {optional}
  • 1 tbsp of olive oil

Recipe:

  1. Finely grind the oats to a powder/flour consistency and set aside. {You can use a blender, food processor or a Magic Bullet type of appliance.}
  2. Over a low heat, melt the coconut oil in a pan until it has a liquid consistency.
  3. Add in a few drops of Rosemary Oil. {If you are adding it.}
  4. Add ground oats in the pan and mix until well blended.
  5. Now, pour the olive oil into the mixture until blended.

{This is what it will look like once all items are added…}

6. Once all ingredients are mixed, remove from heat and pour in to a small storage container. {It filled up 1 1/2 baby food jars.} Let it harden for several hours.

Now that your recipe is complete… Apply to hands and skin as needed and feel the magic at work! ;-) This recipe lasts for a long period of time so enjoy!

  • WHY OATS? Oatmeal contains healthy fats. When they come into contact with your skin, these fats help to add moisture to soften and repair your skin.
  • WHY COCONUT OIL? Coconut oil works wonders as a moisturizer for all skin types, especially dry skin and aging skin, leaving you refreshed and looking wide-awake. The fat in the oil helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles without any irritation.
  • WHY OLIVE OIL? It is a great skin moisturizer, in part because it contains linoleic acid, a compound not made by the body, but which prevents water from evaporating.
  • WHY ROSEMARY OIL? Rosemary essential helps in toning your skin and removing dryness.

The Miracle Mask

Hey DIY-ers!

It’s starting to get crazy around here! We’re heading for Tennessee {yeeee-haw} tomorrow to meet up with my side of the family for a little trip. I’ve always been pretty ridiculous when it comes to packing {must. pack. EVERYTHING.} but now I have to pack for a 9 month old who requires LOTS of entertainment and LOTS of extra outfits {always lovely to have your child have a blow-out on a trip. *rolls eyes*}. I sound gripey but I’m really excited!…just not a fan of packing and/or unpacking. ;-)

I was on a hunt for a fan-freakin’-tastic mask that I could make at home for a very lite price andddd I found one! I didn’t even have to purchase ANY items for this DIY {I can hear the hubs applauding proudly for a frugal wifey}! You ready folks?!

ITEMS NEEDED:

Check, check and check! All in the pantry.

I’m sure you are wondering why these products are helpful for your skin. No worries…I researched…and the result? “Nutmeg and honey act as natural anti-inflammatories {reduces swelling and redness in skin}. They’re also great for soothing acne scars and preventing infection.In addition, the nutmeg and cinnamon also work to exfoliate your skin when you wash this mask off.” Thank you collegefashion.net for this info which is actually where I found this DIY Mask.

Do you have all your products out now?? Okay, lets go…

{{This recipe makes a single serving. Below is a recipe for a larger amount}} To create the mask, mix 2 tablespoons of honey with a teaspoon of cinnamon and a teaspoon of nutmeg.

Image

Image

The consistency should be like a thick paste. {{Almost looks good enough to eat :) }}

Image

Now it’s time to apply the mask to your face! Come on people…slather it on! {It’s going to feel gritty but that’s part of the fun!}

{{MUG SHOT ;-) }}

Image

Let it set on your skin for 30 mins….Image

Wash it off with warm water, scrubbing softly in circular motion for exfoliation.

Image

Now feel how soft and young your skin feels…“like a babies bottom.” haha.

Once rinsed, I immediately put on moisturizer {if you have dry skin as well I would recommend doing this}.

{{I made the larger recipe in a baby food jar. You mix 6 tablespoons of honey, 2 tablespoons of cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of nutmeg.}}

Image

{Jazzed up the jar…}

What do you think??

Wish me luck everyone on our car ride to Tennessee!! :-D
