Vintage Uprising

Happy New Year everyone! Can you believe we’re in 2013? Crazy! I’m sure your New Years Eve plans didn’t surpass mine…Jealous? Well let me just give you a play by play of my evening… Starting around 3:30 pm Lyla {daughter} starts bawling and will not stop. I’m talking like you would’ve thought someone just punched her right in the stomach type of cry. Well, the crying did not stop until around 10 pm and even then I just dwindled down to a constant whine. So my friends, I rang in the New Year with a toddler that had a stomach virus. Womp, Womp, Womp. {Let me just drown in my sorrows now.} I was dying to get out and celebrate with everyone but hubs had to work and I was cooped up in germ fest. Ahhh… I love my girl DEARLY but it was not the best New Years Eve I’ve ever had, that’s for sure. I am incredibly thankful for that little princess though. I wouldn’t change the fact that I did get to spend it with her and got lots of cuddles so I really can’t complain. ;-)

Anyways, enough of that… Jake {hubs} was snooping around at Goodwill Outlet recently and found an AMAZING, vintage dresser for $15. {What a steal!!} They literally were bringing out the dresser as he was walking in. He texted a pic to me and asked what I thought about it. I’m like, are you kidding?! That’s freakin’ mine! I wasn’t about to pass that baby up! I mean seriously… I’ve been scoping out Craigslist and every Flea Market around for a vintage dresser I could make over. I know it would be a lot easier to just hand over a few hundred bills {or more} on a “vintage inspired” dresser but I love a project aaand what’s a vintage project when it’s not even technically vintage…? Well this pure vintage piece got a little modern touch added to it. Check out the before and after…

Dip Dyed Chair

I just wanted to pop in for a moment and share another makeover piece that is going in my craft room! This project is easy-peasy for anyone and takes nearly no time at all!

As you all know I’m switching a couple things up in my craft room at the moment {just to spice it up a bit}. I originally had a very thin, modern chair sitting at my craft table but I decided to move it into another room. I really wanted a chair a little more “boxy” at my craft table {that my wonderful hubs made!} to take up more of the space since the table is so large. Months ago we had bought two bar stools and three wooden chairs at an auction for $1. YES, $1 for ALL of them! I didn’t even reeeeally care about ANY of the chairs but no one, not ONE person was bidding on them and geez…$1? You can’t even buy a pack of gum for a dollar now days! We snagged them up and what do you know…?! I’ve loved them! I decided they needed a little bit of a modern touch though since they are more of traditional style chairs and I don’t fit the bill for a “traditional style” girl. I didn’t necessarily want to paint the entire chair because the color of the wood is lovely sooo I decided to dip-dye the chair{s} and make that my craft room seat. I mean, what’s more fun than dip-dying furniture?!? ;-) Here’s how…

1st things 1st}} TAPE IT OFF how high you would like the “dip-dye” look to go on your piece of furniture.

2nd}} PAINT up to the taped off area.

3rd}} TAKE OFF TAPE and VOILA!

I can’t wait to show you what it looks like in the craft room!

Giving life to my lampshade

It’s been a busy week for me {and everyone right?} and I’m happy Saturday is HERE! This weekend will be fun since hubs and I are meeting up with some of our good friends today! Eeps :)

As you all know, I am giving my craft room/office a little TLC {let me tell ya, it is in dire need of it!}. I’m incredibly thankful that I have a space to call “my own” and in saying that… I need to use my space wisely. In the rest of our home it’s mostly “put together” but my craft room, uh hum, it’s clutter fest and of course I’m the person who claims to HATE clutter. ;-) I’m hoping soon to go room by room in my house and organize sharing the process with you all! Well now that I’ve “confessed”… let’s move on since this post IS on my thrifted lamp & lampshade makeover and NOT on organization. lol. {In my upcoming posts for my craft room makeover there will be organization tips. Stay tuned ;-) }

I found this lamp over a year ago at an antique store in Lafayette but could not find a lampshade to fit nor could I find one I liked. For a “quick fix” I spray painted the lamp and covered the lampshade with some fabric and plopped it in my craft room but it never grew on me. It’s been sitting there for months that way, all dull and boring and I can’t take it another stinkin’ day. It’s time to give my lampshade some LIFE!

Here’s how I did it…

First, I found a lampshade at Goodwill that fit perfectly for only $3.99. {Say whaaaaat?! Yes, $3.99! What a steal right?}

Second, using Frog Tape I taped off stripes on the lampshade.

Third, using one of the “mis-tinted” paints I found on sale at Walmart, I painted over the whole lampshade.

FOURTH, I let it set to dry for approx. 1 hour.

FIFTH, Once it was completely dry, I pulled off the tape and BOOM, stripes!

Can’t wait to share more!

Making a Vintage Comeback

I have been running on some crazy DIY juices lately. All I can think about is my NEXT DIY project and a million ideas on how to better my home. In light of this, I have been browsing stalking craigslist like a mad woman. Let me tell you though, it paid off! I found this beautiful retro 50′s chair that I could not live without, literally! Okay, maybe not literally but you get it. I called those craigslist folks up and what did they say? The chair was sitting out at a yard sale. Sitting out? For ANYONE to pick up?! EEPS! No, no, no. I packed up miss thing {or better yet, my daughter} and headed out the door. After a 40 minute drive with a fussy toddler we arrived and there it was in all its glory! I gave the elderly gentlemen the cash and said “oh yeah…that thing is MINE”. He looked at me like I was a bit insane. LOL. They loaded it up for me and we were on our way. When I got it home I brought that bad boy in and plopped it in my living room! I was IN LOVE. Only prob… It doesn’t match my buffet table. No worries though, a little paint {DIY-ers best friend} will fix that right up.

I’m currently painting a rug {I’ll be blogging about it soon!} to go along with this new style. :) I can’t wait to show the living room grand finale!

Bar Stools Makeover

Happy Monday!

Lyla {daughter} and I have been cooped up in the house for most of the day since it’s been chilly & rainy. I’m a huge fan of rainy days though. It’s the perfect time for me to blog away!

Recently I was going through our garage trying to tidy up the clutter fest we had going on in there. Since we have a booth at a flea market we gather up items and store them in our garage until we have space to put them in our booth. Basically, our garage is ALWAYS full. I get in these moods where I de-clutter our home like a crazy, mad fool soooo… away I went into our garage! I found two bar stools that we had bought at an auction at the beginning of the summer. I’m not going to lie, they were straight up ugly and in rough condition but we snagged those babies right up because there was potential! I felt they had sat in our garage long enough, it was time to put some work in to these helpless bar stools! My little girl was already catching some zzzz’s so to work i went. Check it out…

Here’s what we’re dealing with….just plain, old & outdated. {Picture doesn’t even tell it all. They were in pretty bad shape.}

{{Normally, the first step I would suggest would be sanding down the legs first but there was no sealer left on these raw chair legs.}}

First, hubs and I grabbed a chair a piece and went to town popping out the old staples on these chair cushions. {There seemed to be a million of these suckers!}

{This is what we got it down to.}

Second, I painted the bar stools an antique blue color and coated each chair with a sealer. {We had this leftover paint already from another project. Score!}

Third, I cut a circle out of my fabric and stapled it all the way around the bottom of the chair. {Side note: When cutting the circle from the fabric be sure to leave AT LEAST 1-2 inches extra all the way around so you will have plenty of fabric to work with when stapling.}

{Here is the final product!}

Looks MUCH better! I think they would be adorable in a girls dorm room. Hopefully they sell quickly in our booth! :)

Enjoy your day!!

We have a booth!

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to PoP in for a second and share some of our excitement! The oh-so-wonderful man in my life that I call ‘the hubs’ {brownie points baby???} and I have been wanting to start a booth at a Flea Market but we were indecisive and picky about the location. Recently, we stopped in Beech Grove Emporium Flea Market {opened just shy of a month ago} and realized that was the place for us! We have had crazy fun getting it all going .:-)

As you all know, I can be {uh-hum} eccentric  {to say it nicely} so of course I wanted to “personalize” my booth. I decided to do so by painting brown stripes on the boards. {Now everyone will HAVE to notice my booth since the stripes will be screaming for attention.} Hubs bought a huge board and cut it into 6 pieces to make shelves for the booth {which i love!} and we displayed all of our smaller goodies on them! We enjoy giving old furniture a makeover which is what we did for our larger pieces. We fixed the furniture and made it to look “antique”.

This is what we’ve gotten done today so far…

If you live in the Indy/Greenwood area be sure to stop in Beech Grove Emporium and check out our booth {#1515…the only booth with stripes ;-) }.

Have a fantastic rest of the week!

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure…

Happy Saturday!!!

What a fun week, right?

Wednesday was jammed pack with birthday festivities! I turned a big whoppin’ 23. This is the first birthday where I immediately felt older as soon as I blew out the candles. Hubs made me breakfast in bed and gave me a gift card for a MASSAGE…AH, flippin’ yes! {All you hoppin’ mommas know how much I appreciated that. :-D }

Image

Along with my birthday my little girl turned 9 months and started crawling! {finally} :)

Check out her first piggy-tails!

Image

Welllll…I went on a thrifting spree and wanted to share what I’ve found. Keep in mind some of these items will NEED a makeover but I love when a piece has potential to be fantastic!

I found these two cherry red modern chairs at Goodwill for $10 a piece! They will be going in my future craft room! They are a little beat up so I will be coating them with a little paint but what a deal!

Image

I hit up Goodwill today {first Saturday of every month is 50% off EVERYTHING…yes, everything!} I found these next two items there! This one for $3.99 and the next for $2.99! {Not sure where I am going to display them yet.}

Image

Image

I fell in love with this oriental style rug at “The Vintage Store” and had to buy it…especially when it was only $19. The colors will add great pizazz to a room!Image

This next item is a diamond in the rough. Many of you are going to question why I bought it {as Jake did ;-) } but I see potential! Once I sand this beauty down, paint it and get new knobs it will be an obvious statement. {{Only $10 at a yard sale.}}

Prime Vintage

It’s a nice {more like} beautiful Saturday! Lovin’ the weather in the 80′s {feels like summerrrr!}

Over the course of this week we {Hubs & I} have done quite a few projects and I thought I would share …just one {for now}! ;)

About seven months ago I purchased an old vintage stereo. It was not a gem to look at or anything but I saw potential and for $20 well, I just had to buy it! {Unfortunately I didn’t take a picture. It was way before I started my blog. It was all the brown color you see on the front.} Jake & I decided to paint it this coral color but it was… a fail. Neither of us were blown away by the look of it. We attempted to do a second makeover {painted it white and beat up the edges to look “antique-ish”}.Image

We liked it but it was a little simple for us. Onto the third makeover {I know, we are crazy}….

I wanted Chevron on the top to add a little pizazz sooo I measured out the width of how far apart I wanted the Chevron to be and taped that bad boy out!

Image

Image

I kept the furniture white and painted over the tape with black. I let it dry {which seemed to be an eternity long wait} and pulled off the tape.

Image

A couple more things were still in need for the look we desired. I ripped out that fabric covering the speakers and painted it black inside and painted the nobs black for a bold look. Here is the final product….DUN-DUN-DUN….

Image

YES YES YES! I couldn’t be happier! A cheap {and fun} makeover.

***{Excuse our DVD player’s under the furniture. We have to get a shelf installed under our TV to hold them :) }***

Would you ever consider doing a project like this?

Goin’ Green…

It’s the weekend! {Holla}

Does anyone else feel there aren’t enough days in a weekend?! If only we could have a FULL five days of play and two days of work {a girl can dream}. I’m treating myself to a girls night this weekend and can’t be more pumped about it! Shopping, dinner, movie and visiting small town shops sounds like a plan to me!

Well everyone, you’re all going to think I’m a deranged DIYer. I painted a….. high back antique chair. Yup, guilty as charged. A few months ago I went to Goodwill and found a solid high back chair for $5 {what a steal}. I couldn’t help but think there WAS potential for this old chair. It’s been from room to room in our house including keeping our garage company for a short time {neglected} and I’ve yet to find the perfect fit for it. I looked into reupholstering the chair but felt clueless on where to begin sooo I got out the paint and thought …what the heck, why not?! It was only$5 anyways!

Here is a before pic:

Image

and the after pic…

I’m in love with this bold makeover! It looks WONDERFUL as a accent piece in our living room!

I just used semi gloss paint to paint the chair but it ended up quite stiff soo here is the proper way of painting a chair.

Items needed:
1 Quart of latex satin paint in the color of your choice
1 Spray bottle full of water
1 2 inch or smaller paint brush
Fabric medium {equal to the amount of paint that you use}
Acrylic craft paint in the color of your choice
Sand paper in around a 180 grit

HOW TO:
1. Mix 1:1 parts of latex paint and fabric medium

2. Water that down with 1/2 the amount of water as paint and stir.

3.  Spritz the part of the chair you will start with first with water.

4. Brush on the paint.

5. Sand any particularly rough parts.

6.  Now, it’s time for a final coat using the acrylic paint.  Mix it 1:1 with the fabric medium, like you did with the latex paint.

What do you think?

P.S. This chair is just a sneak peek of the living room makeover we recently did. Soon to come I will show you the living room as a whole so you can get the full effect of this FUN chair makeover!

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!!! :)
