10 Makeup Mistakes

mistakes

I was reading on Oprah today and found this amazing info! It explains the top 10 makeup mistakes that most women make. I found it to be insightful and thought I would share! Enjoy ladies :)

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

foundationMistake #1: Using Too Much Foundation

A foundation that’s too thick will settle into fine lines and sap the luminosity from your skin. “Only use foundation where you need it to even out discoloration,” says makeup artist Frances Hathaway. “You don’t have to cover every inch of your skin.” When buying a foundation, avoid those described as “matte,” “velvet,” and “long-wearing”; look for sheer liquid formulas with light-diffusing pigments. If you have dry skin, foundation can look patchy and accentuate discoloration, so exfoliate two to three times a week and always apply a moisturizer after cleansing.

eye circlesMistake #2: Over-Concealing Your Under-Eye Circles

A thick concealer that comes in a stick will eradicate the shadows under your eyes, but it will also draw attention to the crepiness and fine lines that usually show up in that area first (because the skin there is thin). A better option: A brush-on highlighter pen that uses illuminating particles, not opaque color, to camouflage dark circles. Apply it only near the inner corners of your under-eye area, where shadows are most prominent.

lipsMistake #3: Wearing Deep, Dark Lip Colors

A dark color makes any surface look smaller—a welcome illusion perhaps on your hips but not your lips. To make your mouth look fuller, choose bright lipsticks and glosses (peaches, pinks, vibrant reds) over deep shades (burgundies, wines, browns). Makeup artists use another trick to create the illusion of luscious lips: Before applying color, trace a highlighter pencil along your upper lip line, then buff it out with your finger.

powderMistake #4: Finishing with Powder

Youthful skin reflects light. Powders prevent light reflection and tend to magnify lines in the skin. If powder has been the final step of your makeup routine since high school, it can be difficult to quit cold-turkey. Here’s a three-step program: First, switch to a very sheer translucent powder. Then, start using it only on your nose and chin. Finally, trade the powder for a packet of blotting tissues—use one, only on the T-zone (nose, chin, and forehead), if you’re shiny midday.

Cosmetic pencil.Mistake #5: Wearing Black Eyeliner

Don’t skip eyeliner altogether—it’s a great way to make your eyes look more open—but choose brown over black, which can be harsh. And keep the color diffuse. “You want to define the eyes with softness and blending, not strict lines,” says makeup artist Troy Surratt. “A thick liner can leave the upper lids looking heavier than they are.” The best technique: Trace a brown pencil liner along the upper lash line (into the roots of the lashes), focusing on the outer corners; smudge it with a Q-tip.

liplinerMistake #6: Going Overboard with Lip Liner

A lip liner can define your lips and prevent color from feathering into any lines around the mouth but choose one very carefully. If you line your lips too heavily, or with a color that’s too dark, they’ll look tight and pursed. For the most natural effect, your lip liner should match the color of your lips, not the color of your lipstick. Choose a creamy formula that won’t adhere to any dry patches and use it to fill in your lips entirely.

bottom lashesMistake #7: Using Liner and Mascara on Your Lower Lashes

Playing up your lower lashes can make your eyes look droopy and draw attention to dark circles. Instead, curl your upper lashes and wiggle a volumizing mascara into their roots and slowly through the ends for the most uplifting effect.

Woman Applying BlushMistake #8: Skipping Blush

A rosy flush on your cheeks brings instant life to your face. And, if applied correctly, blush can offer a little lift. Smile, find the fleshiest part of your cheek and apply color just slightly above it. Blend the color out toward your temples in circles, not a line, using a big fluffy brush. You want to avoid a stripe of color that stretches along your cheekbones, which can make you look drawn and hollow, says Surratt.

lipstickMistake #9: Applying Lipstick Straight from the Tube

The borders of the lips soften with age, and any extra lipstick migrates easily. To avoid bleeding color, use your finger or a lip brush so that you don’t deposit too much pigment. Concentrate the lipstick in the center of your mouth, and blend it out with a finger. Top it with a moisturizing balm or light gloss.

eyebrowsMistake #10: Choosing a Too-Dark Eyebrow Pencil

“Your brow color fades as you age, so the brow pencil that you were using at 25 will look too stark against your complexion at 50,” says makeup artist Denise Markey. She recommends Maybelline Define-a-Brow Eyebrow Pencils which come in four shades. Choose the one that’s a shade or two lighter than your natural brow color. If your brows are starting to get a little wiry, run a clear brow gel over them as well, brushing them up and out toward your temples.

Carpet Stains..?!

Does anyone else have a weird obsession with vacuuming? {Don’t leave me high and dry now folks..} I could possibly be on one of those shows like “My Strange Addiction” and you’ll see me singing to myself, vacuuming every inch of my floor, claiming it to be my stress reliever. haha. Wellll maybe that’s a teensy-tiny stretch but for real, I vacuum.. a lot. ;-)

Now that confession time is over, let’s move on to my point…

In the process of vacuuming my home, I moved a rug aside that should have been vacuumed under at least a year ago {–>don’t judge} juuuuust to find that I had originally put the rug in that specific spot to cover where I had dripped grey paint. Oh yeah, dripped dark grey paint everywhere… like all over our creamy colored carpet. AHHH! I had totally forgot all about the paint spot and realized it was time to rid of that nastiness. I pulled out one ‘ingredient’ from our pantry {hydrogen peroxide} and started an experiment. It was a complete surprise to me that it actually worked! I decided to go online and scope things out to see if I’m the only crazy fool who pulls out hydrogen peroxide from their pantry to clean carpet stains and guess what?! There are plenty of other crazies out there that have tried this too AND have found it successful!

Here’s the deets…

carpet cleaner

Items Needed:

  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Damp Cloth

the “How-To”:

1. Saturate the stained section of your carpet with Hydrogen Peroxide. {I used a cloth saturated in Hydrogen Peroxide and soaked it that way. You can also use a sponge!}

stain

2. Allow to sit for five minutes.
3. Blot & scrub the stain with a damp cloth until it is removed.

4. Repeat as many times as needed until the stain is completely gone.

I swear by this simple method! Honestly… I’ve been using it all over my house and so far it’s been a success!

Detox Bath

There is no doubt in this day and age, our bodies are open to more toxins than ever! Toxins seem to be everywhere… in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the medications we take and in the water we drink. {Yuck.} One way to remove all this junk from your body is by detoxification {<<<–the body’s way of removing and metabolizing these dangerous compounds} and by doing so, we flush out toxins, boost our health, strengthen our immune system and prevent disease! {All pluses in my book!} If we do not remove the toxins, metabolic waste builds up in our body and can cause illnesses.

I found this list of today’s modern diseases that are related to toxicity via healthylivinghowto.com:

  • Parkinson’s
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Dementia
  • Heart disease
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia syndrome
  • Cancers
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Food allergies
  • Arthritis
  • Digestive diseases
  • Menstrual problems

So let’s move on to the positive now, the good stuff… soaking in the tub!

How do I detox? –>>> A detox bath made from Epsom Salt!
It’s one of the easiest therapies that can enhance our body’s natural detox process.
Epsom Salt not only draws out toxins, but also has health benefits of it’s own as well!
–>>>Benefits of Epsom Salt: Eases stress and relaxes the body, relieves pain and muscle cramps, helps muscles and nerves function properly, helps prevent hardening of arteries and blood clots, makes insulin more effective, relieves constipation and eliminates toxins from the body. {Click here for details on benefits and uses: saltworks.us}

Detox Bath “How-To”:

1. Add 2 cups epsom salt to your bath water. {Get the water as hot as you can stand it. We’re looking to create a nice sweat!}

2. If your bath water is not filtered, add 1 cup of baking soda. {This helps neutralize the chemicals as well as increase mineral absorption.}

4. Immerse yourself in the water, allll the way up to your neck. {Soak for at least 20 mins.}

5. Once you are done soaking, get up slowly. {You may feel a little light-headed, this will go away as soon as you shower quickly in cool water.}

6. Once dry you can apply a natural moisturizer like shea butter or coconut oil. {Again no lotions with perfumes, dyes or chemicals.}

Tips:

  • Do not eat immediately before OR after taking a detox bath. Instead, hydrate yourself with filtered water before AND after.
  • Rest and rejuvenate.
  • Do not use harsh soaps/shampoos after bath since your pores are open & will absorb the chemicals from those products.
 Q’s & A’s:
How are toxins released via a detox bath? –>>> Through sweat!
The skin is the largest detoxification organ in which toxins can be drawn out through via sweat.
How often should I take a detox bath? –>>> Daily!
Dr. Mark Hyman {functional medicine expert} encourages a 20 minute detox bath daily, right before bed.
Enjoy feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and squeaky clean! ;-)

Elderberry Syrup {Home-Made Cold & Cough Syrup}

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with friends and family! I had family from my side AND my husbands side in town for all the fun Christmas festivities! It was madness… Fifteen of us got snowed in at my mother-in-laws cabin sooo we played games, went sledding and ate like nobody’s business until we crashed. Although it was a lot of fun, I’m thankful to be getting back into the routine of every day life. Unfortunately, every day life currently consists of my little one having a nasty cold due to this December weather. Out of a moment of desperation, I asked {more like begged ;-) } all of my Facebook friends for a remedy to rid Lyla’s {my daughters} cough. My cousin Cindy giving me a fantastic recipe for Elderberry Syrup which is safe for adults and children! I have heard of Elderberry Syrup before but didn’t know much about it so I decided to research it out. Here’s the info aaand the recipe!

This smells delicious and I have to say I love the way it tastes as well! Added benefit! :-)

Q’s & A’s:

How often can I take Elderberry Syrup? -Adults and children {above the age of 1} can take this daily to boost the immune system. Standard dose is 1 tsp for kids and 1 Tbsp for adults. If the flu does strike, take the normal dose every 2-3 hours instead of once a day until symptoms disappear. **If pregnant, consult doctor first!**

Why elderberries? -Elderberries contain potassium and large amounts of vitamin C, and have been proven in quite a few  studies to shorten the duration of cold and flu symptoms, as well as strengthen the immune system. Elderberries are also a good source of anthocyanins {powerful antioxidants}.

Why ginger? -It’s prevention of nausea and vomiting is the most well-documented use for ginger root. It is particularly helpful in cases of chemotherapy, motion sickness and morning sickness. Ginger root may also fight inflammation and is useful in treating conditions such as arthritis or ulcerative colitis.

Why cinnamon? -Cinnamon inhibits bacterial growth and can help fight illness.

Why cloves? -The active principles in the clove are known to have antioxidant, anti-septic, local anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, rubefacient (warming and soothing), carminative and anti-flatulent properties.

Why raw honey? -Honey contains far more anti-oxidants than some fruits and vegetables and every vitamin and mineral including water we need to sustain life. Honey has all the enzymes which help to ensure our foods are digested properly keeping our immune systems working properly plus it is really helpful for irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis and even when trying to lose weight. Your skin will benefit from raw honey too, this is perhaps one of the most understated acne cures and is wonderful for healing and tightening the skin because it heals, protects and moisturizes.

I know all of you will enjoy all of the excellent benefits of this Elderberry Syrup as much as I am! Good luck :-)

25 Coconut Oil Uses & Benefits

Hey everyone! Christmas is just a couple days away and I’ve yet to finish my Christmas shopping! {Eeks. slacker!} As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, when it comes to buying Christmas presents I am a procrastinator and I know I’m not the only one out there because the mall was filled with them yesterday. lol. Thank goodness I’m a passionate DIY-er though. I’ve been beasting out body scrubs as presents for friends and family. I LOOOOVE how the coconut oil in it makes my skin look and feel so I had to share! I don’t know about all of you but I’m becoming slightly obsessed with coconut oil and all of the benefits that come along with using it. While searching around on Pinterest, I found this site that was uber informative about coconut oil and wanted to share some of my favorite tips I pulled from it. Enjoy!

coco.oil

1. Age Spots (also known as liver spots) – applying coconut oil directly to the age spot will help it fade.

3. Baldness – apply three times a day to affected area of hair loss. Coconut oil supports cell regeneration.

4. Body Scrub – mix coconut oil and sugar together and rub all over! Rinse off and your skin will be super soft! You can add in essential oils if you would like a specific smell.

5. Bug Bites – when applied directly to a bug bite, coconut oil can stop the itching and burning sensation as well as hasten the healing process.

6. Chapstick – just rub a little into lips and it not only acts as a softening agent but it also has an SPF of about 4 so you get a little protection!

7. Cradle Cap – having issues with dry skin on your baby’s scalp? Coconut oil will not only nourish your baby’s skin, it also helps eliminate cradle cap. Just rub a teaspoon onto scalp daily.

8. Dandruff – coconut oil soaks into the scalp moisturizing dry skin and relieves symptoms of dandruff. It also helps to control oil secretion from the scalp, another leading cause of dandruff.

9. Deodorant – coconut oil alone can be used as a deodorant, but even more effective in combination with cornstarch/arrowroot powder and baking soda!

10. Diaper Salve – very comforting on a rashy bum with no harsh chemicals. Also safe for cloth diapers.

11. Eye cream – apply under the eyes to reduce puffiness, bags and wrinkles. Use on the lids in the evening.

12. Face Wash/ Soap – mix equal parts coconut oil with olive oil, almond oil, avocado oil and castor oil and use in place of soap when washing your face. Wet face, rub oil in and leave on for two minutes, rinse and pat dry. One teaspoon should be adequate.

13. Hair conditioner/ Deep Treatment – use as a leave-in hair conditioner by applying a teaspoon of coconut oil to your ends and then running your fingers through your hair to distribute the rest!

14. Makeup Remover – use a cotton swab and a dab of coconut oil and you would be amazed at how well it works!

15. Moisturizer – simply scoop some out of the jar and apply all over your body, including neck and face.

16. Stretch Mark Cream – coconut oil is great at nourishing damaged skin. It may not be the magic stretch mark cure but it will help.

17. Toothpaste – mix coconut oil and baking soda and dab a little of the mix on your toothbrush as a toothpaste.

18. Wrinkle Prevention and Wrinkle Reducer – rubbing coconut oil on winkles and sagging skin helps strengthen the connective tissues to bring back that youthful look!

19. Breastfeeding – for breastfeeding moms, consuming 3 ½ tablespoons of coconut oil daily will enrich the milk supply.

20. Bones and Teeth – coconut oil aids in the absorption of calcium and magnesium leading to better development of bones and teeth.

21. Nausea – rub a dab of coconut oil on the inside for the wrist and forearm to calm an upset stomach.

22. Stress Relief – relieve mental fatigue by applying coconut oil to the head in a circular, massaging motion. The natural aroma of coconuts is extremely soothing thus helping to lower your stress level.

23. Chewing Gum in Hair Remover – just rub some coconut oil over the stuck chewing gum, leave in for about 30 minutes, then roll the gum between your fingertip. Voila! It’s out!

24. Goo Gone – just mix equal parts coconut oil and baking soda into a paste. Apply to the “sticky” area and let it set for a minute. Then scrub off with an old toothbrush or the scrubby side of a sponge.

25. Insect repellent – mix coconut oil with peppermint oil extract and rub it all over exposed skin. Keeps insects off better than anything with DEET! Tons safer too.

Snow Globes

{Typically Mondays are “Crock Pot Monday” but with this past week being a holiday it kind of threw me off my schedule. We will resume with “Crock Pot Monday” next week! :) }

Thanksgiving has barely come and gone and Christmas is in FULL swing around here! {We don’t mess around with our holidays in this household. ;-) We make the most of every. single. one.} Two weeks ago I put up our tree, started setting out Christmas decor on the mantle and of course I was adding pine cones in the mix wherever I could. {I know, too soon right?} Everything was looking great until I turned my eyes toward my kitchen table. {Dun, dun, dun…} Completely EMPTY! It needed some Christmas pizzazz, a little h0liday cheer and yet I had nothing {nothing!} left out of my decor to put there! I wanted a budget friendly DIY sooo I ran by the ol’ trusty Walmart and picked up a few mini trees for $0.75 a piece {basically a steal} and decided to make snow globes! Using mason jars, salt and mini trees I was able to create a cozy Christmas display that was uber cheap. Check it out!

Here is how I did it as you’ll see in the pics below as well…

  • Glue your object {tree, pine cone, ornament, etc.} to the inside of the mason jar lid.
  • Fill your mason jar up with “snow”. {I just used sea salt for mine.}
  • Put your lid on the mason jar and flip upside down.

Boom. You are done. Now have fun decorating around the snow globes!

Have fun decorating!

EASY Modern Art

As all of you DIY-ers, I’ve been working on giving a little pizazz to my craft room/office. It’s been a very functional space for me up to this point but it was lacking in color and inspiration. {What good is a craft room without color or inspiration?} It was in dire need of a little “pick me up” art that would bring in a fun, modern element! I saw on Pinterest ages ago the phrase “Do More Of What Makes You Happy” and felt it was a MUST for the craft room. Luckily, I had all the items I needed to create this art project on the spot! {How often does that happen?!} Here’s how easy-peasy it is…

ITEMS NEEDED:

  • Canvas {the size is your choice– I used a 16 x 16}
  • Graphic Mail Box Numbers/Letters {You can purchase a pack of them at Walmart for $1.79}
  • Mod Podge {I actually used a standard clear sealer as you’ll see in the pics}
  • Scissors
  • Paint Brush
  • Pencil

HOW TO:

1.}} Decide how far apart you would like your lines/phrases to be and lightly draw a line across the canvas with your pencil.

{If you want to be precise with your spacing, divide the length of your canvas by how many lines/phrases you are wanting and the number you are left with will be how many inches you will need to space your words apart.}

EXAMPLE: 16 in canvas divided by 4 lines/phrases = a new line/phrase every 4 inches on your canvas.

2.}} Cut out your numbers/letters, peel the back off and lay them out on your canvas as desired.

3.}} Erase the pencil markings you made.

4.}} Cover your canvas {generously} with mod podge/sealer covering all letters/numbers in the process. {You will want a trash bag, newspaper, etc. under the canvas for this process.}

5.}} Let dry. {approx 1 hour}

6.}} Display your art!

Feel free to share the phrase you use for your art! :)

DIY Jewelry Cleaner

Hey folks! The weekend is in sight and I can hardly wait! I’m headed to Apple Works with my parents, sister and daughter {hubs has an event to attend to :-/} to get the best pumpkins ever! ;-) Also, {yes there’s more!} our town is having a festival the same day. -{Double whammy}- Pumped!

Well it’s been approximately a year of NOT cleaning my wedding rings {bad wife of the year -_-} and I was finally starting to feel guilty about it. LOL. As weird as it is, I almost feel like I’m being unappreciative or disrespectful towards my marriage if my ring isn’t spick and span. Although that isn’t the case, I do feel it’s important to take care of your jewelry especially the pieces that have meaning {ohhhh you know, like my wedding ring! ha}. I just couldn’t stand to look at my “foggy” rings anymore and I had ran out of jewelry cleaner {ages ago} so what to do?!… I decided to make my own cleaner! Why not? Here it is…

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup of hot water
  • 1 tablespoon Baking Soda
  • 1 tablespoon Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Dish Soap

HOW TO:

  • Heat your water in a bowl {cereal bowl} for 2 mins.
  • Once heated, combine ALL ingredients into the bowl with the water. {Slightly stir.}
  • Place ring in the bowl and let sit for 5-10 mins.
  • Rinse with cold water and pat dry with a soft towel.

It’s just that easy! I was so pleased by the results I received I just HAD to share. :)

{Works best on nickel, sterling silver, gold and silver.}

Enjoy! :)

DIY Glass/Stainless Steel Cleaner

Well DIY-ers, after a looong night with a very sick baby I couldn’t WAIT to get lost in my bloggy world today! It’s the best outlet for me aaaand I love connecting with all of you! :)

I am becoming a “frugal Fannie” now-a-days. Once a little baby joined the family I realized we were going to have to cut back in our budget for me to be a stay at home mommy. We’ve done fantastic with cutting unnecessary expenses out of our budget and now… I ENJOY finding more areas to cut back spending costs. {I know, I sound crazy.} In my opinion, cleaning products are one of the BEST areas to cut cost in. Of course we still need to clean our homes {unfortunately. lol.} but by making your own cleaning products you save lots of moo-lah {$$} and have less chemicals around the house. {Win, win! As a mommy that’s uber important to me.} As you already know, I previously made a DIY hard water remover {which I just used up} and it worked better than ANY store bought product I’ve ever used sooo I decided my goal was going to be to fill up my cleaning bucket with all home made cleaners. Wish me luck! ;-)

ITEMS NEEDED:

2 1/2 cups water

2 1/2 cups rubbing alcohol

4 tablespoons white vinegar

Spray bottle

DIRECTIONS:
Combine the water, rubbing alcohol and white vinegar into your spray bottle. I slightly shook the bottle to mix all ingredients well. Then spray either your glass or stainless steel, wipe dry and voila! Easy as that!

Super easy and works fantastic! I started cleaning my outside windows with this cleaner and it was streak-free. Score!

Have a great rest of your day! :)
