Meet Katie…

Hey folks! I want to introduce you to a dear friend of mine who I have asked to start writing twice a week here on DIYconfessions.com! She will be giving many tips & craft ideas for the kiddos! Everyone please welcome Katie…
Hello world, Katie at your service! As you all already know, DIYconfessions has become such a big hit and SO wonderfully popular that, well, Ceara just had to let me in on it! ;) Katies profile
Let me introduce myself. My name is Katie, I have been a preschool teacher for 3 years now, and before I got hired on at the current school I work at, I was a substitute for 2 years. I have age groups ranging from 2 years old to 4 years old. I am also a Nanny! Summers are filled with fun when I have my 4 nieces every day! The oldest being 12 helps me help you with steps of middle school transitions! The next oldest is 10, trust me when I say that I’m learning to deal with back talk! ;) The next is 6 years old, homework in kindergarten is not easy anymore people! And last but not least is 2 years old! I love them as if they are my own! I have such a passion for children (even though I do not have any of my own) and I want to share that passion with YOU and help shape our children to be wonderful adults, maybe together we can change the world!! (okay, okay, high hopes there I know) ha-ha!!
But, we have to start somewhere! As you may know, kids ages 2 to 4 just LOVE to have their way. Let’s work on getting them satisfied without giving in! Lets work on fine motor skills, lets work on memorization, social skills, and avoiding speech issues! Lets talk about craft ideas that avoid messy messes for Moms and easy learning for child! Lets talk about how to disciple without harsh punishment that teaches your child to obey! Let me share with you what I have learned from conferences and experience and fellow teachers! Now, I am no where near an expert, but I will say, I have learned a LOT over the last 5 years in my line of work! I want to share the importance of how we can shape our children at such young ages so that life may not be so difficult for them and for you! I hope you like what I have to offer!! Thanks for letting me be a part of your world of DIYconfessions!!

My Top 4 Must-Haves

The other day hubs and I went shopping for a bit and of course he found everything within minutes {and on crazy good sales I might add} while I snooped around for what felt ages just to find one lonely top. I’m finding it’s hard to know what to buy for the near future since the baby bump is already bumpin’. I decided to make a summer must-haves/need/wants list to motivate me to get those core pieces that are stylish but interchangeable! My wardrobe is screaming for help so here’s the list!

1. CHEVRON MAXI DRESS:

I’ve been dying to find the perfect chevron Maxi Dress and I do believe I found it and what’s even better is…IT’S CORAL! ahhh. :-) Everyone needs to run over to hazelandolive.com and buy this ASAP because it’s adorable!

Mint is the hottest color right now and I have to admit I’m a sucker for it right along with everyone else! I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a pair of mint wedges and can’t seem to find any until now! I find it fun mixing colors up and not always “perfectly matching” and these shoes {via beyondtherack.com} would be the perfect asset to add a little flair to an outfit!

3. NEUTRAL HAND BAG

I found a very simple yet fantastic neutral hand bag that I feel like you can throw on with ANYTHING! Of course coach.com can never go wrong in my eyes. Check it out!

SPRING CLEANING {tips & tricks} LIST

Have you been feeling the itch yet for a down and dirty Spring cleaning? I recently made a Spring cleaning to-do list for my house and finally got the gumption to start checking things off {after a power nap and some good ol’ sweet tea}! Doesn’t it feel fantastic when you start purging your home? I hate having wasted space where things just sit around and aren’t being used buuut we all do it and I’m as guilty as the next bloke. Spring cleaning is a great time to take those items that you aren’t in need of anymore to a charity of some sort. As the phrase goes, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” and it’s oh so true. Although we all love the feeling of how clean our home is afterwards, sometimes Spring cleaning can seem overwhelming at times and just plain tedious. I decided to make a Spring Cleaning Tips & Tricks List that will hopefully help me to stay motivated and encourage you as well!

Easy Bathroom DIY tips {GUEST POST}

We decided to have Helen Davies swing by today and share a couple of her simple yet great DIY tips to make for an easy bathroom makeover!  Helen  is a keen blogger, claims to be a Pinterest addict and currently works as a freelance writer for Better Bathrooms. She is also an interior designer that has regularly been published in a wide rang of magazines and websites in the US as well as in the UK! She has a passion for design as well as DIY and is always on the hunt for new and creative ways to decorate a room! Be sure to check out her fun and informative site! So let’s get to it… here’s the scoop!

EASY BATHROOM DIY by Helen Davies

I’ve spent a lot of time recently thinking about how I can brighten up my bathroom for spring. The days are getting lighter and sunnier, and my bathroom is looking a little… well… faded. I’ve got my eye on a cheap bathroom suite which I’d like to get installed in a couple of years, when the kids are bigger, but for now I’m planning to see just how much of a difference I can make to the space over a few weeks – by myself, one job at a time, when I have the time.

So. Here’s my plan…

Task number one: Cleaning. Lots and LOTS of cleaning. I’m planning to use homemade stuff where I can – white vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice can do the work of a bunch of expensively packaged chemicals and you honestly can’t tell the difference after you’re done. Even that slight smell of vinegar fades once the room’s dried out. Sparkly clean! The grout around my bathroom tiles is a little gross though, so after a thorough clean, I’ll whiten it back up with a grout pen. That’s only cheating a bit!

Task number two: Repaint the walls. Once everywhere is sparkly, it’ll be time to get some fresh colour into the room. The walls are quite a dark shade at the moment and although there’s plenty of natural light in the room, I’m craving a really light, bright space for the new season. So I’ve bought a can of brilliant white for the ceiling and plenty of pale sage green bathroom paint for the walls. I love green, and it’s a very natural, calming shade.

green

Task number three: Freshen up the wooden cabinets and bath panels. My bathroom furniture was in the bathroom when I moved in and while it looks ok and is very practical, it’s always been a bit orange for my taste. I’m not a fan of varnish – I prefer a more natural, matt look. So I’m going to sand the wood down and stain the surfaces in an antique oak shade. I’ve also got some cool vintage handles in antique brass to replace the polished (and rapidly aging) ones that are on there now.

Task number four: Wall art. By this stage, the space should be looking presentable, but maybe not that interesting. I’m planning to add wall stickers to inject a little personality to my room. I know I could do something more DIY but honestly, I love wall stickers – they’re just so easy! Because I love fresh flowers in the bathroom but usually end up with a bunch of wilted tulips that have seen many, many better days, dying in there for weeks….. I’m going to add some oversized blossom wall art. Should give my room a spring zing, and I don’t have to remember to add water or flower food!

Have a wonderful day!

Home-Made Weed Killer

Well, as you obviously have notice I’ve been MIA lately {..err, like nearly a flippin’ month} while DIYconfessions has been getting it’s makeover. I’ve missed being in touch with all of you!!! I’ve sort of been having withdrawals… but I’m glad to be getting back in the groove of things now!

Folks, although it’s nearly the end of April, here in Indiana we have been STILL getting snow! Just a week ago or so it was 75 degrees outside and the day after it was spitting flurries outside. Eeps… I’m not a lover of snow but especially this late in the game. I’m living like it’s full blown Spring around here; pulling weeds, fixing up the yard, getting ready to plant flowers! This drab Indy weather is not going holding me back. ;-) This year we have terrible weeds! Worse than the norm. Lyla loves all the dandelions in the yard though and calls them her “fowers” {aka: flowers} so at least someone is enjoying them. The weeds seem to be overtaking our walkway though and I’m simply not feeling it. I figured along with all the other home-made products I enjoy making there has to be one for ridding away all of the weeds. I found what works for us and decided to go ahead and share with all of you. Hopefully you find it as helpful as we did!

photo (94)

Ingredients:

  • White Vinegar {Yup, that’s all!}
  • Spray Bottle

Recipe:

  • Fill the spray bottle with white vinegar
  • Spray directly onto your weeds. {This recipe works best when it is hotter outside so it can dry up the weeds. *Be sure not to spray on your flower bed as it will eliminate your flowers.*}

This recipe is easy {<– my favorite kind} but works aaaand not to mention you save money in comparison to other over the counter weed killers! Boom! That’s enough of an incentive for me to make it.

Have a lovely day everyone!

Carpet Powder

As I’ve confessed on here before, I am an avid vacuum-er, {eh-hum, possible addict}. I love how fresh and clean my home feels after I vacuum even if there is toys & shoes still everywhere! My obsession has become even more crazy now that we have a pup. Of course the puppy chews and chews on anything and everything leaving crumbs behind in the process… and that’s when I come in, the crazy lady with the vacuum. I had bought some inexpensive carpet powder at Walmart forever and a day ago but I recently ran out. Anytime I run out of a store bought product I like to replace it with a home-made one! Obviously the more natural the cleaning products I use, the better the environment is for our family and even the pup {Lennon}! Baking soda is ALWAYS my go-to product that I love, love, LOVE to use. It disinfects areas as well as eliminates smells! Win, Win in my book {especially when you have a stinky pup running around. ;-) }. Here is my very SIMPLE version on carpet powder that I found to work for our family… feel free to try it out!

photo (89)

Items Needed:

  • 1 1/2 cups Baking Soda
  • Essential Oil or spice  to desired smell {I used cinnamon}
  • Bottle to store it in {I used a mason jar with a parmesan cheese lid. It fits perfectly!}

How To:

  • Mix together your baking soda and essential oil/spice.
  • Shake well.
  • Sprinkle freely amongst your carpet. {I let mine sit for approx. 5 mins just to let it do it’s work.}
  • Vacuum

I love simple yet “green” home-made products! You may be wondering why I chose baking soda and cinnamon…

Q & A’s:

Why baking soda? -Baking soda is known for it’s disinfecting powers as well as neutralizing smells.

Why cinnamon? -Leaves a fresh, pleasant scent and duals as an ant repellent. {Yes!}

Enjoy!! :-)
