Vintage Uprising

Happy New Year everyone! Can you believe we’re in 2013? Crazy! I’m sure your New Years Eve plans didn’t surpass mine…Jealous? Well let me just give you a play by play of my evening… Starting around 3:30 pm Lyla {daughter} starts bawling and will not stop. I’m talking like you would’ve thought someone just punched her right in the stomach type of cry. Well, the crying did not stop until around 10 pm and even then I just dwindled down to a constant whine. So my friends, I rang in the New Year with a toddler that had a stomach virus. Womp, Womp, Womp. {Let me just drown in my sorrows now.} I was dying to get out and celebrate with everyone but hubs had to work and I was cooped up in germ fest. Ahhh… I love my girl DEARLY but it was not the best New Years Eve I’ve ever had, that’s for sure. I am incredibly thankful for that little princess though. I wouldn’t change the fact that I did get to spend it with her and got lots of cuddles so I really can’t complain. ;-)

Anyways, enough of that… Jake {hubs} was snooping around at Goodwill Outlet recently and found an AMAZING, vintage dresser for $15. {What a steal!!} They literally were bringing out the dresser as he was walking in. He texted a pic to me and asked what I thought about it. I’m like, are you kidding?! That’s freakin’ mine! I wasn’t about to pass that baby up! I mean seriously… I’ve been scoping out Craigslist and every Flea Market around for a vintage dresser I could make over. I know it would be a lot easier to just hand over a few hundred bills {or more} on a “vintage inspired” dresser but I love a project aaand what’s a vintage project when it’s not even technically vintage…? Well this pure vintage piece got a little modern touch added to it. Check out the before and after…

Dip Dyed Chair

I just wanted to pop in for a moment and share another makeover piece that is going in my craft room! This project is easy-peasy for anyone and takes nearly no time at all!

As you all know I’m switching a couple things up in my craft room at the moment {just to spice it up a bit}. I originally had a very thin, modern chair sitting at my craft table but I decided to move it into another room. I really wanted a chair a little more “boxy” at my craft table {that my wonderful hubs made!} to take up more of the space since the table is so large. Months ago we had bought two bar stools and three wooden chairs at an auction for $1. YES, $1 for ALL of them! I didn’t even reeeeally care about ANY of the chairs but no one, not ONE person was bidding on them and geez…$1? You can’t even buy a pack of gum for a dollar now days! We snagged them up and what do you know…?! I’ve loved them! I decided they needed a little bit of a modern touch though since they are more of traditional style chairs and I don’t fit the bill for a “traditional style” girl. I didn’t necessarily want to paint the entire chair because the color of the wood is lovely sooo I decided to dip-dye the chair{s} and make that my craft room seat. I mean, what’s more fun than dip-dying furniture?!? ;-) Here’s how…

1st things 1st}} TAPE IT OFF how high you would like the “dip-dye” look to go on your piece of furniture.

2nd}} PAINT up to the taped off area.

3rd}} TAKE OFF TAPE and VOILA!

I can’t wait to show you what it looks like in the craft room!

Making a Vintage Comeback

I have been running on some crazy DIY juices lately. All I can think about is my NEXT DIY project and a million ideas on how to better my home. In light of this, I have been browsing stalking craigslist like a mad woman. Let me tell you though, it paid off! I found this beautiful retro 50′s chair that I could not live without, literally! Okay, maybe not literally but you get it. I called those craigslist folks up and what did they say? The chair was sitting out at a yard sale. Sitting out? For ANYONE to pick up?! EEPS! No, no, no. I packed up miss thing {or better yet, my daughter} and headed out the door. After a 40 minute drive with a fussy toddler we arrived and there it was in all its glory! I gave the elderly gentlemen the cash and said “oh yeah…that thing is MINE”. He looked at me like I was a bit insane. LOL. They loaded it up for me and we were on our way. When I got it home I brought that bad boy in and plopped it in my living room! I was IN LOVE. Only prob… It doesn’t match my buffet table. No worries though, a little paint {DIY-ers best friend} will fix that right up.

I’m currently painting a rug {I’ll be blogging about it soon!} to go along with this new style. :) I can’t wait to show the living room grand finale!

Chalkboard Sign

Good morning! :)

It’s a bitter cold morning here in central Indiana. I’m cuddled up under a blanket, sippin’ on some nice soothing chocolate milk {kid at heart} and listening to the sounds of nature. I’m madly in love {<–can we say dramatic} with the changing of the seasons!

Recently, I was working on a little “display” outside my front door. I did have chairs sitting out for Summer but I decided to change it up. I wanted people to get a welcoming/inviting vibe when they came to our front door so I chose to do a more “rustic” setting. Typically everyone associates “rustic” with cozy {or at least I do}. So here it is…

I made this little chalkboard from an old pan {that reeeeally needed to be tossed out}. It only took three EASY steps…

1}} Scrubbed it down thoroughly

2}} Put chalkboard paint in the center {leaving the edges to be seen}

3}} Hung it up with burlap! {easy-peasy right?}

I’m that typical dorky housewife that gets PA-thetically excited to decorate for each season/occasion! {lol} I can’t wait to do one in our little garden {more like grave yard for plants}. :)

Enjoy your day!

DIY Laundry Detergent

Good afternoon everyone!

Any great plans for the weekend? This lady and her hubs are going on a double date tonight {AHH!} SoOoO our Saturday should be fun-filled!

Lately, I’ve been on a mission to figure out where we can cut back and save some pretty pennies in our monthly budget. Typically anything that is “DIY {Do it yourself}” saves money and as you all know I’m all about the “DIY-ing”. At a past holiday, I was chatting with my aunt about attempting to go more “natural” with foods, soaps and anything else I can do {especially since the hubs, the daughter and myself ALL have eczema :-/}. She mentioned she was given a recipe for a laundry detergent that costs $25 to make and lasts up to 9 months! {yes, 9 MONTHS!} Immediately I was doing the math in my head… if you break down the costs it’s as if you are only spending $2 a month for detergent with this recipe! I know my little family of three spends a lot more than $2 a month on detergent and I can’t even imagine what you mommy’s of four + more spend on detergent. {Can you imagine what “Kate + eight spends on detergent a month or even better…the oh so loved “Dugger family”. It makes me shed a couple tears for them. LOL} So let’s get started on saving all the moolah!

ITEMS NEEDED:

1 – 4lb 12oz box Borax
1 – 4lb box Arm & Hammer Baking Soda
1 – Box Arm & Hammer Super Wash Soda
3 – Bars Fels-naptha Soap {you could use pink Zote or Ivory soap -not Ivory cleansing bar-}
2 – Small containers of Oxyclean {store brand fine}

Oh and a LARGE bucket! {I used a 5 gallon bucket to mix the ingredients.}

1}} Line your bucket with a trash bag. {I tied twine around the rim so when mixing the ingredients the bag wouldn’t fall in.}

2}} Shred your three bars of soap {like how you would grate cheese}.

3}} Combine all ingredients into the bucket and mix.

4}} Use 2 tablespoons per load & enjoy your fresh laundry!

{{I just washed my first load of laundry with this and it feels wonderful and smells! Keep in mind your laundry will smell fresh but does not have a strong smell like a store bought detergent will.}}

Enjoy! Now you got to think what you’re going to do with all that extra money you’ve saved with this! ;-)

Pallet Coffee Table? I think so…

It’s Monday?….already? The weekend went by too fast but I say bring on the Monday madness {dark circles under eyes and hot chocolate in hand…let’s go}! :)

Along with all the fun festivities that occurred this weekend, Jake and I watched “The Avengers” {yes, I am a closet nerd}. At first I was just trying to be the “cool” wife and be all pumped for a superhero movie but then I actually got excited for it! Surprisingly it was a very entertaining movie too and….confession = I liked loved it! If you haven’t seen it yet I would definitely recommend you give it a chance. :)

Alright, yadda yadda yadda. Let’s go on…

In the making of re-decorating our living room we realized we were in need of a coffee table {more or less something you can prop your feet up on but can duel as a coffee table}. Being the overly frugal DIY-er I am I suggested using pallets for our coffee table. The hubs was all in! He even mentioned that he could bring some pallets home from his work {perfect!}. He brought them home the next day and we scurried out to get some paint and wheels for this new beauty.

It just so happened to be amazingly gorgeous out so we cranked up a little “Of Monsters and Men” and painted the pallets outside. I got on my DIY high and beasted it out {okay, well with a great deal of help from Jake ;) }. Once all was painted we nailed the two pallets together and added the wheels to the bottom aaaaaand boom….new coffee table for under $25. You can’t beat that! :) Threw on a little decorations and here we are….

Pleased, satisfied, happy…you name it and that’s what I am!

What do you think??

Prime Vintage

It’s a nice {more like} beautiful Saturday! Lovin’ the weather in the 80′s {feels like summerrrr!}

Over the course of this week we {Hubs & I} have done quite a few projects and I thought I would share …just one {for now}! ;)

About seven months ago I purchased an old vintage stereo. It was not a gem to look at or anything but I saw potential and for $20 well, I just had to buy it! {Unfortunately I didn’t take a picture. It was way before I started my blog. It was all the brown color you see on the front.} Jake & I decided to paint it this coral color but it was… a fail. Neither of us were blown away by the look of it. We attempted to do a second makeover {painted it white and beat up the edges to look “antique-ish”}.Image

We liked it but it was a little simple for us. Onto the third makeover {I know, we are crazy}….

I wanted Chevron on the top to add a little pizazz sooo I measured out the width of how far apart I wanted the Chevron to be and taped that bad boy out!

Image

Image

I kept the furniture white and painted over the tape with black. I let it dry {which seemed to be an eternity long wait} and pulled off the tape.

Image

A couple more things were still in need for the look we desired. I ripped out that fabric covering the speakers and painted it black inside and painted the nobs black for a bold look. Here is the final product….DUN-DUN-DUN….

Image

YES YES YES! I couldn’t be happier! A cheap {and fun} makeover.

***{Excuse our DVD player’s under the furniture. We have to get a shelf installed under our TV to hold them :) }***

Would you ever consider doing a project like this?

Pillowcase Dress with Tutorial & Winner Reveal

It’s Wednesday!

We’re over the hump {almost} and the weekend is in sight!

First things first…Thanks to everyone who entered in the Mother’s Day Giveaway! I know you all have anxiously been waiting to see who the winner is! Are you ready for the results?! And the winner is.………….

Connie Neal!

Congratulations! I will be contacting you later today!

Next on the agenda is the Pillowcase Dress Tutorial {fun, fun!}

ITEMS NEEDED:

  • 1/2 a yard of your favorite three fabrics {If you would like you can just do one fabric but I like a little mixture}
  • Spool of Ribbon
  • Thread
  • Sewing Pins
  • Scissors
  • Tape Measure
  • and of course a Sewing Machine

TUTORIAL:

*My measurements I used are for a 9 month old. They are: 14 inches long & 14 inches wide {for main fabric}, 3 1/2 in arm holes, 2 3/4 width & 14 inches long {second fabric}, 2 3/4 width & third fabric.*

1}} Do you have your pen and paper ready? Alright…Start by measuring the length. {The best way to do this is by measuring the back of the neck to the back of the knee.} Once you’ve measured, add 2 inches {so when you sew your seam you won’t lose length}.

2}} Measure the width of your child. {The best way to do this is from shoulder to shoulder.} Once you’ve measured, add 2 inches.

3}} Measure the arm holes. {The best way to do this is to measure from the top of the shoulder to where you would like the arm hole to end.} Add 1 inch.

4}} Now we’re ready! Fold your fabric in half and cut out a square in your fabric using the length and width measurements {not arm holes yet}. *If you are using multiple fabrics like I am then be sure to knock off about 6 inches or whatever you feel looks good.*

5}} Next, cut out “J’s” for the arm holes. {I cut 3 1/2 inches long and about 2/12 inches deep. Keep in mind my measurements are for a 9 month old.}

Image

6}} If you are doing multiple layers… Fold your second fabric in half and cut to the width you would like. {Mine was 2 3/4 in width and 14 inches long.}

Image

7}} Fold your third fabric in half and cut. {Once again, I used 2 3/4 in width and 14 inches long.}

Image

8}} It’s time to get to the good stuff…sew away! Separate all pieces from each other. On your main fabric fold in the edges {on both pieces individually} about a 1/2 an inch and pin. Image

Image

9}} Continue to do this for your second and third fabric as well. {Be sure to fold in ALL edges.}

10}} Once all edges are pinned, sew each piece individually.

Image

11}} Next, measure the width of your ribbon. Fold in the top of your dress to the width of your ribbon. Pin & sew.

12}} Turn in the bottom of your main fabric and the top of your second fabric {to where the front sides are facing each other} and pin. Sew straight line where the two pieces meet.Image

13}} Turn in the bottom of your second fabric to the top of your third fabric {like you did for the first layers}. Pin and sew.

14}} Hang in there, you’re almost done! Now turn your fabric inside out {where the front and back of the dress is turned in to each other}. Pin ONLY the sides of the dress {under the arm holes and down to the bottom} and sew.

15}} {Turn right side out} Fold the bottom of the whole dress in about a half an inch. Pin & sew for a clean seam.

16}} Last but not least….Push your ribbon through the loops of the back of the dress to the front and tie a pretty bow. :-)

You’re done! Now step back, take a deep breath and admire your work!

Here is my little model {my daughter :-) } struttin’ her stuff in her new dress…

Once you’ve made this dress please share pics! {Don’t be shy ;-) } I would love to see them!

Enjoy the rest of your week!
